Course Description:
Seventh grade science is a one-semester class designed to introduce students to the Next Generation Science Standards adopted by Oregon in 2014. The standards mix science content with scientific practices or skills and larger cross cutting concepts. The course is designed to include three major content areas including physical science, life science and earth science as recommended by the Oregon Science Content and Assessment Panel grade level middle school science standards sequence. Each content area will be taught with a focus on becoming proficient at the following practices.
Students will create and maintain an Interactive Student Notebooks. All investigations will be documented in their notebooks. End of unit projects will involve using a variety of technology, producing posters and creating models both individually and in groups.
Assignments & Grading Policy:
Students will be graded based on mastery of the scientific practices and on associated content on a scale from 1 to 5. The grading system is designed to take the mode of all the grades in the practices and the mode of the grades on the content and then average those two grades. The Silver Falls school District applies additional programming before the final letter grade is assigned.
Academic Expectations: No zeroes are acceptable. Students with missing assignments will be expected to come to my class during AG the following day to work on the missing work. If the students chooses not to use AG time to complete missing work, the student will be expected to come to my class during lunch or after school to finish the work. If students earn a D or below on an academic grade, the assessment must be repeated. Students are required to perform some guided practice prior to re-taking an assessment. Students are also allowed to re-do assignments up to two times to reach proficiency.
Required Materials:
Missing Assignments: Please ASK a friend what you missed and borrow their notebook. Ask Mrs. Powell to borrow her notebook and copy the notes you missed. Retrieve any missing handouts in the file folder in the back of the classroom. If you are missing more than one day, feel free to email me and I will share assignments on google docs or post them onto google classroom.
