1) When you enter class
In my class, this time is called "Ready... Set... Engage!". When you enter the room, get ready (Put your homework in the Inbox, get your science notebook and sharpen your pencil), get set (get settled into your seat), and engage in writing the title, date and answering the opening question on the board. By the time the bell rings, you should be silent, seated in desk and working.
2) Supplies
You will need a composition notebook, pencil and a folder for class. You may keep your notebook and papers in a hanging file folder inside the classroom if this helps you.
3) RULES
Be Safe, Respectful and Responsible
When you are in class...
1. Listen and follow directions.
2. Follow along during whole class instruction.. (see below)
3. Raise your hand during lessons.
4. Respect your classmates and your teacher.
5. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
6. Do not leave the science room without permission.
7. Wash and put all equipment neatly back into tubs after the period is over.
8. Do not play fight or roughhouse.
9. Do not curse or use bad language.
Follow along...
4) If you miss class...
There are 3 ways to obtain missed work BEFORE ASKING THE TEACHER:
1) Go to the assignment book next to the Daily Crate
2) Go to the Daily Crate and choose the handout based on the date you missed
3) Ask a friend
5) Labeling homework/labs and tests
Use the period, a dash and then your number when the class is in alphabetical order. For example period 2 and the person’s last name is first in his/her class in alphabetical order. Then label the paper 2-1. This will expedite my grading tremendously!
6) Using the bathroom, sharpening pencils, throwing out trash & getting drinks during class
If you need to get up for any reason wait until I finish talking. (Unless it is an emergency!) You don’t need permission to walk to the sharpener or throw trash. Please walk directly to the destination without interrupting others.
The school wide policy does not allow students to leave the room during the first 10 or last 10 minutes of class. If your leaving the room, please sign out using the clipboard on the counter by the door. Write your name, date and time and stand waiting by the door for Mrs. Powell to give you a thumbs up before you leave. Please do not yell out across the room to get my attention.
7) NO NAME BASKET
No-name papers will go in “No Name basket” and thrown away at the end of each trimester. It is your job to go to the basket and look through the papers.
8) Water Bottles and Gum
Water bottles with lids are encouraged in class. Please do not bring sugar drinks or food into my class. Healthy snacks are permitted only on an as needed basis and will be consumed in the hallway.
9) Finished work early?
If you have completed your work your options include*
a) Silent Read b) Volunteer to help in class c) Homework from other classes
10) Getting your attention
Attention means you are not talking, you posture is pointed toward the teacher, and you are not working on anything else.
Freeze Body Stance. I will raise my hand and stand in front of the class. That is your cue to stop talking, quiet your body and look at me.
Class/Yes. Whenever I say "class" you say "yes". However I say "class" you say "yes" in the same way.
Clap-Clap: "If you can hear me clap once" CLAP...repeat
Give Me Five. Individuals or the class can practice this exercise after the bell rings if practice is necessary. A) Stop what you are doing, B) give Mrs. Powell your attention, and C) count down to one with Mrs. Powell to help others know it is time.
We will practice after class as necessary.
11) Fire and Earthquake Drill information
Line up quietly in alphabetical order using your assigned number. Last person outside of the room turns out the light. NO TALKING ON THE WAY TO THE TENNIS COURTS. Line up on our room number #20 in a perfectly straight line. Please remain silent so we can here any additional instructions.
12) Unprepared for class?
If you forget…
a) …your science notebook, you will have to record your work on paper and tape or copy it in to your notebook later. Extra paper is found in the back of the room by the pencil sharpener.
b) …your homework, turn it in as soon as possible. Same day turn ins will not be counted late.
c) …your pencil, You may borrow one of my pencils from the corner of my desk. Please give it back at the end of class so it will be there tomorrow if you should need it. Do not disturb the class.
13) End of class
With about 5 minutes left, I’ll give the cue to clean up. After cleaning up, have a seat and wait to be excused. The teacher excuses the class, not the bell. If your area is not clean, you will remain after the bell.
12) Homework
We will have homework each week. You will have to answer 7 questions about a graph. It is due on MONDAYS! In addition to our graph interpretations, we will have quizzes on a weekly basis and unit tests.
CONSEQUENCES for DISRUPTIVE CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
1. I will politely ask you to stop a particular rule-breaking behavior--which I will only do one time--or make lingering eye contact with you, either of these scenarios is you official warning.
2. If you receive a warning, but then break a rule again later in the period—or doesn't stop the behavior upon being asked—then I will repeat the process. In other words, I will ask you to stop or make eye contact once again. I will then ask you to stay after class.
When you stay after class, I will remind you how many points you lost for the day, and then inform you that if I see similar behavior during the rest of the week, then I will call their parents and refer them to the school-wide discipline policy.
3. If your behavior becomes a problem—i.e., the same behavior returns within days of our brief conversation—then I will speak to you again after class to inform you that you will be calling to let their parent(s) now. Further, I will take advantage of our school-wide discipline consequence.
If you maintain a sufficient average of points you will be in line for random prizes and/ or an activity. These are being developed right now.
14) Cooperative Group Norms
a) All group members should stay with the group and be on task. Continued failure to be productive will result in being moved to another group where you might be more productive.
B) If you would like to switch groups, you may request it in writing with a possible swap. There are no guarantees! The best way to have power is to be productive. Be patient. There are many students. In general, I want groups to stay together as long as possible. Be careful what you ask for – multiple swaps will not be likely granted!
We learn by effort, collaboration, and making mistakes.
